The Filberg Heritage Lodge and Park
is a fascinating history and contemporary guide to the former home
and property of logging magnate and millionaire Robert Filberg and
his wife Florence.
In a combination of stunning photographs and lively
text, the 50-page, full colour book highlights the rustic elegance
of the Filberg’s handcrafted home, the varied and distinctive
features of the lush, nine-acre waterfront property and, of course,
the lives of the Filbergs themselves.
Work began on the lodge in 1929. An innovative use
of local wood and stone with unique hand-finished details created
a one-of-a-kind residence that is as inviting today as it was 80
years ago. The grounds, now a mix of meadows and treed areas, contain
rare and exotic trees, extensive flowerbeds and a thriving herb
garden.
When Robert Filberg died in 1977, he left his property
and a multi-million dollar trust fund to the Vancouver Foundation.
Two years later, with the assistance of the Vancouver Foundation
and numerous Comox Valley residents, the lodge and property was
purchased by the Town of Comox. The site now serves as the setting
for the annual Filberg Festival, as well as a venue for art shows,
concerts, weddings and other events. The lodge and property were
granted heritage status in 1979.
The Filberg Heritage Lodge and Park is published by
the Filberg Heritage Lodge and Park Association and retails for
$16.95.
